Locally Grown to Serve our Community
The FPC Monroe Community Garden began as a way to provide our neighbors access to personal plots to grow fresh vegetables and produce for themselves and to give away in the community. The garden is located across the street from the church on Talleyrand Street and is sponsored by First Presbyterian Church and Heart for Monroe.
The FPC Monroe Community Garden has 18 raised beds that can be reserved by individuals, families, or groups. Garden space is still available. Contact us today to reserve a raised bed.
There is also about a half an acre of land that is planted every year by Heart for Monroe and volunteers. The gardeners plant potatoes, cucumbers, jalapenos, bell peppers, eggplant, broccoli, cabbage, okra, tomatoes, melons, and squash as well as other vegetables each year to give freely to the community through Heart for Monroe Ministry Center (The Closest Ministry in Downtown Monroe). The garden always welcomes volunteer help and donations. The wish list includes but is not limited to: seeds or plants for any veggies, flowers (not bushes or tall), a rain barrel, wheelbarrow, a compost bin, and compost.
Throughout the summer, FPC Monroe hosts Free Garden Market days at the Community Garden site, where our neighbors are invited to come for free fresh vegetables and fellowship.
If you would like to bring surplus produce from your personal gardens to support the market event, they would be gratefully accepted and distributed. Donations can be brought to the church office the week before the scheduled event between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM, or they can be brought directly to the market on the day of the event.
